SUMMARY: Veterinary Services has the primary function of conserving the health of Seaboard swine herds. The function is carried out by serving the various branches of Seaboard's Live Production Department. The veterinarian works with the Manager of Veterinary Services. This will involve the diagnostic work, planning health programs, monitoring health, developing systems, project work, training personnel, presenting information, maintaining biosecurity programs, medication use, and involvement with governmental regulatory concerns.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned at management's discretion.

* Help create, supervise and coordinate the herd health programs to enhance throughput.

* Monitor and implement procedures that will enhance biosecurity to ensure a high health status herd.

* Provide expertise in the diagnosis and troubleshooting of production and health issues in all phases of production.

* Assist in the implementation of production education programs for employees.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The veterinarian must hold a degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited veterinary college. Previous experience in swine production medicine is preferred.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Strong communication skills are required to effectively convey meaning while writing documents and correspondence. An employee must exhibit good personnel communicative capabilities and habits. The employee must be able to speak before a group.

REASONING ABILITY and MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: The veterinarian must be able to solve practical problems and deal with multi-variable situations involving animal health. Also required is an ability to interpret information from meetings, discussions, articles, and find application of the material into the Seaboard production system. Must possess superior listening and interpersonal skills and be self-motivated, hard-working, and a passionate team member focused on production pork in a cost-competitive environment. The employee must have the ability to use algebra and calculate values such as proportions, percentages, and apply the concepts of mathematics. A veterinarian will be acquainted with descriptive statistics and their interpretation.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (MS Word, Excel, Word Documents, PowerPoint) is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: : Must possess a current valid driver license and an acceptable MVR. Required to maintain PQA Plus advisor status, USDA Accreditation and veterinary licensure in the state(s) of practice.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and sometimes push and/or move up to 300 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, and risk of electric shock. The employee is frequently exposed to waste material, feed and hog dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established by departmental needs and at the discretion of management. Occasionally, changes in schedule will be required as special circumstance arise.
