Corporate Tax Controller


Leadership role over all tax reporting and accounting for all businesses of the TIAA-CREF group. Assures timely and accurate provisioning, filing and financial statement reporting for life insurance and non-life insurance companies including implementation of appropriate accounting process improvements and technology solutions. Manages all attest audits of tax accruals and works closely with non-tax Controllers to properly reflect financial accounting impacts and disclosures. Collaborates with the Director of Tax Compliance to insure the accurate and timely preparation and review of various Federal, foreign, state, County and city tax returns, including reconciliations to the tax accruals. Manages the accounting of accrual to tax return adjustments, the true up of FAS 109 deferred taxes, the timely accrual of tax audit adjustments and the allocation of tax accounting to subsidiaries. Ensures compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal control requirements, regarding all tax provisions tax compliance and tax payments. Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the organization, evaluation of intangibles and expertise in federal, state and jurisdictional tax statutes. Participates in tax planning and provides tax impact analysis on proposed transactions/business initiatives. Participates and exercises good judgment in organization-wide development of methods, techniques and evaluation for projects, programs and people. Supports the gathering and formatting of material to defend and support tax return and refund filings. Excellent communication and financial analysis skills required to convey the tax impacts of complex technical issues to non-tax stakeholders. Excellent understanding of US Federal taxation and the US GAAP and Statutory accounting related to Federal and state income, state premiums and foreign taxes. Qualifications
Qualifications:



15 years of corporate tax experience including a minimum of 10 years insurance industry and 7 years of tax controllership experience


CPA certificate required and advanced degree in taxation preferred.


Tax experience must include provisioning, filing and financial statement reporting for life insurance companies as well as broad exposure to general tax and accounting principles; excellent knowledge of consolidated returns including life/non-life and significant exposure to multi-state taxes, international taxation, tax research, taxation of financial instruments, tax reserves, capital management, reinsurance, mergers and acquisitions and intercompany tax sharing agreements.


Excellent understanding and experience required related to FAS 109, FIN 48, SSAP 10R and 101 and APB28.
