JOB DESCRIPTIONJob Description:
The role of the Analyst is to provide assistance to the team responsible for the commencement of retiree and survivor pension and health benefits and case management under the defined benefit pension plans sponsored by United States Steel Corporation and its subsidiaries in the USA.
This position is based at headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA and reports to the Supervisor Benefit Commencement.
Perform active death processing
Analyze and quality check all applicable information contained in the deceased, retired or active participant s file:
o Vested status;
o Service (creditable, continuous, and allowed) for eligibility and benefit
o Pensionable earnings;
o Retirement Types available (Normal, Early, Deferred Vested), as well as the
commencement date and benefit amounts applicable to each type of
o Optional Forms of Benefit available (single life, etc.) as well as the
commencement date and benefit amounts applicable to each optional form;
o Temporary pension supplement payable, if any, and the termination date
o Responsible for Benefit adjustments / offsets / proration for Split Case, Sold
Location, United Mine Workers (UMW) benefits, Qualified Domestic
Relations Order (QDRO)s, and Railroad and Social Security offsets, using
applicable guidelines and contract agreements;
o Plan-provided surviving spouse benefit, if any, before reduction by the
Social Security widows benefit (determined at commencement of the
surviving spouse benefit);
o Offsets for overpayment(s), underpayment(s) and/or outstanding checks
that may be payable to spouse or determined non-spouse beneficiary;
o Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) calculation, if applicable;
Ensure written (and summary of oral) communications to participant performed; and Pension packet to be provided to retired and surviving spouse participants Survivor benefits payable under the Optional Form of Benefit elected by retired or eligible active participant, if any;
Gather written (and summary of oral) communications to survivor and/or beneficiary of deceased retiree or active participant; and
Ensure validation of all required participant (retiree, survivor, beneficiary) documentation has been requested from, and returned by, the participant in a fully completed and executed form, as required by guidelines;
Oversee eligibility determination for H&W benefits (health and/or life for retiree; health for spouse).
Provide assistance / training to Pension Associates with respect to the proper interpretation and application of the applicable pension plan rules, sales agreements and pension calculations.
Work with Process and Tech Support to manage yearly audits
Manage processing of Leased Service Inquiries
Work with HR and review monthly reports in regards to service and eligibility
Audit and Process completed cases and supporting documents to be set up for monthly or lump sum payment
Forward supporting documentation to Benefit Service Center for enrollment and administration of pension (initial setup) and benefits (health and life insurance).
Facilitate pension exit meetings with retirees, face-to-face or via conference line, to review and finalize pension / survivor benefits and other benefit elections (health and life insurance).
Identify recommendations for process improvements from staff for current services and capabilities.
Lead and/or support special projects associated with retiree and survivor pension commencement activities.
Assist with pension estimates for employees.
Manage employee communications on pre-retirement vesting (5 years of continuous service).
Provide guidance to all members of the Pension Operations and Share Services group with respect to changes in plan provisions, business processes or Xerox functionality.
Dependent Life Claims,
o Ensure staff validates all required participant documentation has been
requested from, and returned by, the participant or plant representative in a
fully completed and executed form, as required by guidelines;
o Scan and submit to MetLife
o Track and maintain files

Process Union Active Life Ins forms for MetLife
Bachelor s Degree in Business-related, or Human Resources Management field or equivalent work experience; Master s degree in Business, Systems or Human Resources Management a plus;
Knowledge of benefits technologies (XTCM, HW/DB, Case Management, and Self-Service web); Knowledge and understanding of current statutory and regulatory provisions applicable for administering benefit services for active and retired participants.
