JOB DESCRIPTIONPOSITION NO:
WestEd a nonpartisan, nonprofit research, development, and service agency works with education and other communities throughout the United States and abroad to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. WestEd has more than a dozen offices nationwide, from Massachusetts, Vermont, and Georgia, to Illinois, Arizona, and California, with headquarters in San Francisco.
The Standards, Assessment, and Accountability Services program (SAAS) is involved extensively at the local, state, and national levels in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating standards and assessment tools, methods, and systems. Some of SAAS's work is aimed at revealing how well students or workers are learning or performing; other parts of our work address broader concerns of accountability and program or school success. SAAS serves as the test-development contractor for high-stakes assessment programs in several states. Its projects also examine the technical aspects of assessment, as well as focus on a range of assessment and accountability-related issues for various student populations (e.g., English language learners, students with disabilities) and for traditional academic areas and developing fields (e.g., alternative school accountability).
The Deputy Director will work with the Program Director to set and implement a strategy for continuous improvement and program growth. The Deputy's specific areas of focus will be in delivering technical assistance to states and districts, as well as establishing and conducting a research agenda to increase WestEd's visibility as a thought leader and to advance the fields of standards, assessment, and accountability research.
The Deputy will provide senior strategic leadership to the federally funded Center on Standards and Assessment Implementation (CSAI), a 50% time commitment, and will spend the remaining 50% seeking to expand and grow our technical assistance and research capacity. The position will hold ultimate managerial responsibility for approximately 10 staff to start, with a goal to steadily increase the staffing and revenue generated by the technical assistance and research lines of business.
This position is based in San Francisco.
Oversee SAAS s technical assistance and research lines of business
Provide senior strategic leadership to the Center on Standards and Assessment Implementation (CSAI)
Contribute to and implement SAAS s plan for strategic growth
Develop research agenda to support CSAI and our technical assistance work
Increase SAAS visibility and influence,through TAC memberships, white papers, journal articles, and conference presentations
Serve as technical expert for state summative assessment contracts
Identify, generate, and win external funding opportunities
Partner with the SAAS program director to lead the program
Deep knowledge of current standards, assessment, and accountability issues and solutions
Leadership experience at a state department of education is preferred
Recognition as a proven researcher with influential publications and presentations
Experience serving on technical advisory committees is preferred
Expertise in operational test design
Track record for generating, pursuing, and winning external funding
Proven proposal writer
Experienced public speaker
PhD in educational psychology or a related field
COMPENSATION AND LOCATION
The position will be located at WestEd s headquarters at 730 Harrison Street, San Francisco, California 94107. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with the candidate s experience.
