Working under the general direction of the Senior Vice President and in collaboration with the division leaders, provides broad programmatic and operational leadership and support to the department and office of the Senior Vice President by leading or participating in program initiatives, improvements in service standards and training for department teams and in the administrative and financial needs of the department. Partners with the management members manage departmental data, metrics and analytics. Serves as first point of contact for the Office regarding services and engagements. Participates in or leads departmental and hospital committees.


Broadly directs the development, implementation and management of programs, projects and initiatives for the Practice Improvement Department and to support the mission of the MGPO.

Collaborates with division directors and MGPO leaders to establish goals, plans, timelines and deliverables.

Manages client engagement, ensuring communication, satisfaction and post-implementation support.

Collaborates with division leadership team to ensure appropriate team composition for work initiatives.

Manages project teams for effective results that meet the strategic goals and needs of the hospital.

Establishes, oversees and holds teams accountable to various standards, metrics and outcomes.

Monitors for success and makes revisions in plans, workflow, teams, etc. to meet needs.

Serves as a resource to divisions and hospital departments regarding program and project management.

Manages a departmental archive to collect and preserve project documentation, makes this an accessible and useful resource for the team.

Acts as project consultant for large departmental and MGPO projects and as a liaison for consultancy requests and major initiatives of the office.

Partners with MGPO and hospital administrators to establish and manage ad hoc initiatives.

Participates in the development of Practice Improvement services and operations.

Collaborates with the Sr. Vice President and division directors in short and long range planning to determine strategies, priorities and business/program partnerships.

Utilizes knowledge of healthcare, the organization and department programs to shape the core support of the department to meet future needs of the institution.

Works with division directors to standardize and streamline services and policies, increase collaboration and allocate resources and space and utilize cost effective procedures.

Partners with the leadership team to evaluate, select and purchase services and products for the department to include computer systems and office space and renovations. Oversees implementation as needed.

Monitors hospital operational and business needs as well as healthcare trends, identifies, assesses, recommends and develops innovations in department services and programs. Leads implementations in collaboration with division leaders.

Designs and implements training programs to educate staff and improve skills and performance, monitors efficacy of training programs and revises as needed, creates training curriculum, guides and other materials, provides feedback and collaborates with division directors on remedial or enhanced training.

Leads performance management program, ensuring feedback to new employees as well as timely completion of annual appraisals by the management team.

Completes a wide range of projects to support the senior vice president in the operation of the department.

Leads committees and meetings on behalf of the Sr. Vice President.

Leads the outreach and marketing of department and division services to internal and affiliate consumers.

Conducts outreach within the divisions, all MGH/MGPO ambulatory practices, hospital and hospital affiliates to educate leaders on the services of the department and expand the scope of services and engagement.

Develops and deploys market research tools and analyzes results to formulate strategy and plans.

Sets progressive growth targets, monitors and measures the attainment of these goals.

Analyzes information and prepares recommendations for new services and programs for division directors and the Sr. Vice President.

Manages marketing communications for the department, establishes and maintains an information channel with the ambulatory divisions to facilitate information exchange, foster understanding of programs and participation cost/benefit analysis and support organizational change, prepares an annual report.

Communicates departmental updates and information on a regular basis to staff, monitors hospital and public new outlets to bring forward relevant articles and materials.

Serves as first point of contact for complex inquiries to the office of the senior vice president, provides information, data or representation on behalf of the senior vice president.

Serves on or leads committees within the department, hospital or Partners.

Provides financial management.

Prepares operating and capital budgets, leads division budget development and management and collaborates with division directors to ensure needs are met, partners with representatives from the Budget Office to ensure resolution of questions/discrepancies.

Monitors financial performance, ensuring budget targets are realized, identifies and addresses opportunities for improvement and cost savings.

Utilizes expertise to direct and support division directors in formulation and management of division budgets.

Reviews financial data and prepares analyses for decision-making needs of the senior vice president or departmental leaders.

Leads efforts in cost-effectiveness and cost-reduction, collaborating with division leaders as needed.

Manages payor contracts in collaboration with department leaders, including Internal Performance Framework and ensures compliance with agreements, targets and deliverables.

Oversees department data management, analytics, metrics and reporting.

Partners with division directors and MGPO leaders to determine requirements, specifications, timelines and related parameters.

Maintains integrity in data gathering and data quality, ensures appropriate standards and compliance by data staff with methods, retention and analyses.

Identifies methodologies for and conducts analyses of division and departmental data, identifies the story in the data as well as trends, targets and opportunities.

Makes recommendations to division management related to division performance, presents summaries to senior vice president to establish department priorities.

Prepares standard and ad hoc reports for the management team of the department and for MGPO leaders.

Develops and maintains departmental statistics, bench marking, best practices and scorecards.

Creates and updates department dashboard.


Master's degree required, preferably in healthcare or business administration

5 - 7 years direct work experience in ambulatory practice management, project management or related hospital administrative position


Knowledge of medical practice operations and understanding of relationship to hospital operations and needs.

Understanding of operational, financial and data management sufficient to complete responsibilities and collaborate effectively. Knowledge of budget practices and financial analysis.
