Overall purpose of the Job
Responsible for ink mixing, color matching prior to the ink being used on machines, and maintaining color standards as well as all activities associated with mounting dies on die cutters including setup, cleanup, and recommending improvements to operations.
The Ink & Die Room Technician works within a team to operate the ink mixing system and dies for the various machines in a safe, efficient and reliable manner. The position holder will follow all pertinent procedures & processes as well as Group Health & Safety standards and rules
Provides color matching, formulating, and small batch blending support
Selects bases and vehicles so that inks formulated meet or exceed customer needs, regarding such qualities as color, fade resistance, odor, rub resistance, coating compatibility, printing methods, viscosity, tack, grind, etc.
Maintain detailed production and quality control records
Provide strong press side technical service, troubleshoot problems and provide detailed and consistent technical reporting
Identifies rework opportunities based on review of batch tickets
Prepares formula, supervises and participates in weighing out necessary ingredients, mixing and milling all inks to be produced at in plant operation
Performs standard quality control tests to insure inks meet or exceed customer specifications
Prepares draw-downs and displays for color comparisons
Furnishes press side technical service as required to adjust problems, such as shade, color, body, stripping, bleeding, skinning, and assisting with press related problems. Performs troubleshooting
Orders inks, coatings, and raw materials. Maintain inventory levels.
Identifies press returns and learns work-off of materials to insure low dormancy levels
Receives and stores ink, plates and cutting dies in proper storage location daily
Mounts printing dies and proofs for accuracy and proofs other mounter s work for accuracy in accordance with proper setup techniques
Calibrate Ph meters at machine centers weekly
Files printing mounts and dies. Pull printing mounts and dies from files
Inspects all incoming print mounts and cutting dies; repairs as necessary with minimal loss of production
Provides strong press side technical service, troubleshoot problems and provides detailed and consistent technical reporting.
Pulls machine line-ups as necessary
Adheres to production schedule. Makes recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality and service goals. Reports any unusual scheduling issues to Supervisor
Complies with all company policies and procedures, including safety and maintaining good housekeeping
Inspects tooling when picking up from machine and daily follow up with proper documentation
Inventory control of cutting dies removed from machines daily
Assists other departments and/or areas as requested by management or supervisor
Participates in any extra curriculum (training & development) activity deemed necessary by management
Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety and maintaining good housekeeping, report unsecured conditions to Supervisor
Participates in month end inventory
Participates in all safety and hygiene activities as required by the Human Resources and Quality Department
Takes part in any extra curriculum activity deemed necessary by management
Assist other department and/or areas as requested by management or Supervisor
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent, between 5 to 8 years related experience within the Industry
Must possess good mathematical skill to properly weigh and adjust batches as required
Excellent verbal, written communication and coordination skills
Good computer operation skills for dispenser operations, quality control measurements, data acquisition and reporting
Must be well versed in a variety of dispensing software platforms (i.e. SPEC, Novaflow, Mixmaster etc.) and color matching technologies (i.e. X-Rite, SunMatch, etc. )
Must have strong pressroom and printing process knowledge
Highly organized, detail orientated and self-motivated individual (proactive attitude)
Ability to work in fast-paced environment, learn quickly and follow established processes
Good interpersonal skills
High energy, with the ability to work in fast-paced environment

This position does not involve any supervisory responsibilities.
To successfully perform the essential functions of this role it requires the ability to: stand constantly, walk constantly, frequent use of hands (reach with hands and arms), view computer monitor, speak and hear on a frequent basis. The role requires occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
The Ink & Die Room Technician will communicate with supervisors and colleagues on a regular basis and is based in Carson, California.
