* Northrop Grumman Information Systems sector seeks a Systems Engineer 4 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals\. This position will be located in McLean, VA\.Put your years of knowledge into a future of excellence\. The qualified applicant will join our Northrop Grumman's AWIPS Team\. AWIPS is a system of systems for processing, display, and telecommunications used by the National Weather Services \(NWS\)\. AWIPS ingests and integrates meteorological, hydrological, satellite, radar data, and it processes and distributes the data to Weather Forecast Offices, River Forecast Centers, and National Centers\. Weather forecasters use AWIPS to make weather, water, and climate predictions and to issue advisories, watches, and warnings\.AWIPS is used operationally by NWS forecasters and hydrologists 24 hours a day, 365 days a year\.Roles and Responsibilities:
1\) Maintain and control system configurations and system documentation \(e\.g\., site drawings/configurations, Bill of Materials, SMM, SSDD, UM, etc\.\)2\) Manage AWIPS internal and external communications interfaces \(i\.e\., NWWS/NWR, NESDIS, NWSTG, Radar Multicast Server\)3\) Track and initiate renewal of COTS licenses, hardware maintenance agreements, and track hardware end\-of\-life status of each AWIPS component4\) Maintain AWIPS Technology Roadmap and provide leadership during technical reviews with Customer5\) Conduct engineering analysis and trade studies on candidate technology refresh products6\) Support review, analyze, and tracking of all performance data across AWIPS Enterprise7\) Provide analysis of new requirements and recommend solutions to improve AWIPS system performance8\) Support NWS initiatives such as capacity planning, alternate approaches, site relocations, etc\.9\) Analyze impact of modifications/additions to the architecture, including data stream changes10\) Support SLA reviews with regard to benchmarks, industry standards, and current NWS objectives11\) Coordinate execution of new task orders and procurements12\) Perform hardware technology refresh activities from design to acquisition to installation to performance analysis of fielded units, including build/test of field maintenance kits \(FMK\) for site installation and support of Operational Test and Evaluation \(OT&E\)13\) Provide facilities and hardware support for AWIPS test bedBasic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Meteorology or related field- Minimum of 9 years of experience in engineering and science- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in operational weather services or supporting the National Weather Service \(NWS\)- Experience performing and providing technical leadership on programs with complex hardware/software systems- Ability to assess technology and process improvements to drive sustainment and maintenance efficiencies in an operational environment- Experience with systems engineering processes and the configuration management of large scale systems- Experience in planning technology refresh cycles without disruption to operational systems- Ability to quickly understand complex technical problems and recommend effective technical solutions- Experience in developing and deploying hardware solutions to a mission critical enterprise- Experience in managing the performance, availability, scalability, manageability, and security requirements of complex systems- Ability to analyze configurations for potential impacts to operations- Must have strong, hands\-on experience in UNIX and/or Linux environment- Work well as both an individual contributor and as part of an integrated team where adherence to project conventions are highly valued- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills- Demonstrated ability to communicate with different levels of employees \(managers, supervisors and team members\)- Possess strong work ethic- U\.S\. citizenship and ability to pass a Government background check is requiredPreferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AWIPS Enterprise, including knowledge of AWIPS communications infrastructure, including Satellite Broadcast Network/NOAAPORT, Message Handling System, network and site data flows, etc\.- Knowledge of key AWIPS technologies including network and serial communication protocols, and Linux operating system environments- Knowledge of AWIPS NCF requirements, design and operational functionality- Experience in Red Hat System Administration- Experience with open source tools and the installation/integration into a mission critical system- Experience in prototype solutions in a Linux environment- Dedicated to delivering strong, customer\-focused performance in a mission\-critical environmentNorthrop Grumman is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce\.
