The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on clinical studies in Osteoarthritis (OA) working under the supervision of Barton Wise, MD and junior faculty in the Center for Musculoskeletal Health. Successful candidates will also participate in biomedical education as well as rigorous research methodologies.
The Jr. Specialist will be responsible for patient screening, review of patient charts, discussing the research with prospective patients regarding the potential to increase cognitive reappraisal skills that down-regulate emotional reactivity to pain and may improve daily functioning. The incumbent will attend patient visits, create data collection forms, manage the data collection, and organize the data in reportable measures related to mindfulness-bases interventions (MBIs), as well as collect preliminary data to enrich and undergird a future R01 proposal. The specialist will collect samples for serum cortisol levels and changes in eicosanoid parameters. The incumbent will be responsible for the submission of all Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol submissions, including initial application and annual renewals. Through the above-referenced duties, the Junior Specialist will outline and draft manuscripts. Manuscripts will be submitted to the Journal of Arthritis Care & Research, American College of Rheumatology. The incumbent may be asked to present study findings at the Department of Internal Medicine and/or Rheumatology Grand Rounds. The incumbent may be asked to attend the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) annual conference.
*In collaboration with Principal Investigator, Junior Specialist will be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities including experimental study designs, execution, troubleshooting, collecting and interpreting data analysis, and revising plans for future investigator-initiated trials.
*Junior Specialist will be actively participating in hypothesis formulation and refinement based on data obtained from the clinical trials or in the literature.
*Junior Specialist will be actively involved in drafting and revising of abstracts and/or manuscripts. Principal Investigator will look to the Specialist to outline manuscript ideas and theories to pursue within the parameters of this research.
*Junior Specialist will be actively involved in scientific or scholarly literature reviews related to their work on clinical trials to help them gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of Osteoarthritis.
*Junior Specialist will attend appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations in relation to Osteoarthritis (OA).
*Junior Specialist will have opportunities to potentially present and attend Osteoarthritis scientific or scholarly conferences and seminars locally, and monthly Departmental Grand Rounds and Research in Progress meetings.
University and Public Service: For Junior Specialist, University and/or public service will include committee service in the areas of safety and mentorship of undergraduate student volunteers.
Other responsibilities include:
Developing and working on multiple projects under the direction of the principal investigator and junior faculty. Other responsibility of the Junior Specialist in the lab will include the development of clinical trial protocols, database design, clinical data abstraction, specimen handling and collection, tissue banking and processing, data entry, and maintenance of regulatory requirements. The applicant will also assist all members of the clinical trials unit with maintaining daily functions including ordering of supplies, and unit safety.
The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Bachelor degree in biology or in a related field is required and must have been awarded prior to actual hiring date.
Strong oral and written communication skills required. Knowledge and experience in conducting basic laboratory procedures and bioinformatics are highly desirable.
Some classroom experience in laboratory, and/or field research is strongly preferred including conducting biomedical research and handling research specimen. Knowledge of HIPPA, biomedical ethical issues, and writing human subject protocols in conducting human research is also preferred.
Step I - $18.26 hourly, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: 1-year maximum Non-Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
