The Health Information Coder under general direction of the Coding Compliance Manager, will be responsible for reviewing the entire record and capturing the most appropriate codes, diagnosis, procedures and DRG to assure compliance. Assists in the query process, edits any coding flags or warnings. Assign ICD and CPT codes for patients receiving services at UC San Diego Medical Center. Assign DRG and all applicable APC's for patient accounts and abstracts all coded data into abstracting information system.

The Health Information Coder is responsible for data entry into electronic databases for use in assessing the quality of patient care, outcome analysis, and financial management. Be actively involved in communicating coding and documentation requirements to clinicians, and others that access and use the data. Assures the highest level of data integrity, denial avoidance due to coding, and the highest quality of external data released to OSHPD, UCH, or other entity.



Must have coding knowledge or less than 2 years of experience in acute care setting with RHIT/RHIA/CCS or exam-eligible to test and credential within 6 months of hire.

Coding experience with inpatient, outpatient surgery, emergency room records.

Must maintain credentials by attending regular education sessions.

American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Preferred, 2 years coding experience with proven knowledge of inpatient, outpatient, surgery, emergency room records with RHIT, RHIA, CCS credential.



Must be able to work overtime, weekends and holidays if necessary.

Must be able to sit for long periods of time and able to utilize computer skills.
