Job Description:

The position reports directly to the Enterprise Director, Medical Coding and Clinical Documentation at UCLA Health. The Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Manager is responsible for the development of a standardized, system-wide CDI program and oversight of the clinical documentation specialists at UCLA Health.

The CDI manager supervises thirteen (13) CDI specialists at two campuses - UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica & Orthopedic Hospital. The CDS Manager assists the CDS' in their work to improve the quality of chart documentation, accurately reflect a patient's severity of illness and risk of mortality, and provide accurate primary and secondary diagnoses with leads to a presumptive DRG for a given case.

The CDI Manager has responsibility for:

Manages, coordinates and oversees all activities/functions of the Clinical Documentation Improvement Program.

Designs and delivers service specific education for clinicians and directs CDI staff to deliver education which focuses on accurate documentation of severity of illness, risk of mortality and specificity of documentation.

Leads efforts to implement and maintain active CDS's communication with face-to-face physician interactions on the various patient floors.

Leads and partners with physician champions on key documentation initiatives to achieve strategic goals and objectives of the UCLA Health. Collaborates with Physician Advisor(s).

Serves as the liaison with Medical Coding staff regarding coding and documentation issues. Facilitates communications with coding liaison and coding staff to ensure coding reconciliation and development of targeted education for physicians.

Reviews, analyzes, and interprets monthly CDI reports (internal & external) to make informed managerial decisions to identify documentation improvement initiatives and address staff performance issues.

Collaborates with both the EPIC electronic health record team and the 3M 360 Encompass ISS team to review and optimize documentation templates to ensure accurate, timely and complete documentation as well as reflect the quality of care provided by UCLA physicians.

Job Qualifications:

Experience: 3-5 years of increasingly responsible management experience; including at least 3 years of current clinical documentation experience or equivalent of experience in case management, utilization management or prior chart review experience. Academic medical center experience highly preferred

Certifications: CCDS or CDIP and CCS required

License: RN license California Registered Nurse or medical equivalent is preferred

Degree: A Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Case Management, Utilization management, Healthcare or a related field is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
