Job Summary

Functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and assists in nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient by performing routine and delegated duties according to the standards and policies of the hospital and department. Assists in the delivery of quality patient care through utilization of technical skills. Performs technical duties relating to scrub personnel, including smooth, precise and efficient reaction to all situations, and assists with departmental work as assigned. Participates in staff education to a degree consistent with personal knowledge base. Participates in unit Quality Improvement activities. Knows the legal limitations relating to the role of operating room technician and acts accordingly. Assesses each patient's age specific needs and provides age specific treatment and care under the direction of a registered professional nurse. Surgical technologists have a vital role in creating and maintaining a sterile surgical room, ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely, and assisting surgeons during surgical procedures.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education Requirement :

Completion of a Certified Surgical Tech program. Approved pharmacology course or previous medication experience and successful achievement in medications exam.

Minimum Experience Requirement :

OR experience preferred. Knowledge in the use and cleaning/sterilization/disinfection of equipment and instrumentation utilized in the clinical operating room setting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Visual and auditory acuity required with or without adaptive devices.

Minimum License Requirement :

Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists required or demonstrated previous experience that meets the minimum NYS education requirements. BLS certification required. Continuing education requirements of 15 CEU s per year.
