Organizational Overview

The Radiation Detector and Nonproliferation Research and Development Group focuses on research of advanced gamma-ray and neutron detectors for security and diagnostic medical imaging. The Group s work currently is directed at the fields of advanced material growth, novel detector R&D, and design/construction of radiation-detection instrument. The Group has in-house capabilities of material growth and characterization and detector testing, and also uses Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) and National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) for material/device fabrication and testing. In the field of instrumentation development, the Group develops low-noise low-power application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) for signal readout from detectors, designs novel radiation-detection devices/systems including hardware and software, and constructs/tests prototype systems.

Position Description

The Radiation Detector and Nonproliferation Research and Development Group has an opening position for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The successful candidate will work in a team to develop radiation detector systems. Specifically he/she will participate in design of low-power, low-noise, mixed-signal ASICs for radiation detectors including development of design specifications, system-level modeling, schematic circuit design and physical layout at the transistor level, and design verification. The candidate will also work on design and construction of ASIC test systems and carry out actual ASIC tests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

*

Modeling radiation detector and front-end electronics at system level.
*

Developing design specifications of ASICs.
*

Participating in ASIC designs including system-level modeling, schematic design, simulation, layout, and design verification.
*

Working with printed circuit board design group to design and prepare ASIC test systems.
*

Testing/characterizing prototype ASICs in laboratory.
* Analyzing test data.

BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

*

A PhD in physics, nuclear engineering or electrical/electronic engineering.
*

Demonstrated knowledge of microelectronics and circuit design, especially low-noise analog circuit design
*

Knowledge of and training on mixed-signal CMOS circuit design
*

Hands-on experience in ASIC design with 250 nm, 180 nm or more advanced CMOS technologies
*

Experience with integrated circuit design tools, simulation, design and verification of mixed-signal ASICs
* Knowledge of scintillator and semiconductor radiation detectors: principles of operation, properties and signal readout.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

*

Good communication skills to collaborate with other team members and present the research work at professional conferences
*

Experience in experimental verification, designing ASIC test systems, and testing ASICs in laboratory setting
*

Knowledge of circuit modeling languages (VHDL, Verilog, ...)
*

Experience of printed circuit board design
*

Knowledge of C++ and/or python programming language and ROOT data analysis
