JOB PURPOSE/ JOB SUMMARY:
This position is focused on the tasks associated with supporting the development and improvement of welding assessments for products in the automotive, construction, and tubular areas. This individual will have the responsibility for preparing sample material, performing various welding operations, and communicating data and results to the Research and Automotive Center Engineering staff. Additional tasks may include: routine maintenance of welding equipment, and operation of sample handling equipment. Above all, the individual is expected to be able perform any and all tasks safely in an industrial laboratory environment.
Operation of AC and DC spot welder to conduct weldability evaluations of steel sheet materials
Read drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures for welding experiments
Conduct weldability evaluations per provided procedures
Operation of Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) equipment
Operation of hand tools and power tools such as punch presses, band saws, and power shears.
Operation of computer controlled test equipment, e.g., laser welder, laser cutter, water jet cutter, etc .
Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of welding equipment. Must keep track of parts required and order them as needed.
Infrequent overnight travel to U. S. Steel and customer plant facilities.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Minimum of an Associate s Degree in Welding Technology, Welding Technician Degree, or an equivalent of two years experience as a Welding Technician is required.
Must have hands-on experience with arc, gas welding and cutting operations. Must be familiar with common welding methods, non destructive and destructive test methods and procedures for welds.
Strong mechanical and/or electrical control aptitude and laboratory testing skill sets, including familiarity with the operation of computer controlled machinery and test/data logging equipment a plus
Experience with machine language programming a plus
Demonstrated the ability to work independently, as well as with a team, as needed to complete assigned tasks
