Working independently, the employee provides: (1) wet lab work involving scientific techniques focused in molecular biology, cellular immunology, and immunohistochemistry, (2) data analysis and interpretation, and (3) laboratory management support. Wet lab techniques include but are not limited to: mammalian tissue culture, RT and real time PCR, western blotting, high-throughput cell work involving specialized equipment, DNA sequencing, DNA/RNA/protein collection, flow cytometry, agarose and acrylamide electrophoresis. Data analysis includes: handling large volumes of data (Excel), statistical analysis programs (PRISM) and working with specialized software used for various applications including, but not limited to: HALO and Defininiens TissueStudio for immunohistochemistry (IHC) quantification, GraphPad Prism, and an expert working knowledge of Excel for statistical and data analysis. Laboratory management responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ordering necessary laboratory consumables and equipment as needed, preparing and maintaining laboratory directories of all patient biopsies and cell lines, transporting patient biopsies to the TPCL, and ensuring that the laboratory and its personnel are approved and up to date with all regulatory organizations such as EH&S, Laboratory Safety, and the Animal Research Committees.
The following skills, knowledge, and abilities are required: Ability to write legibly using correct spelling to record technical lab results; Ability to communicate effectively and with mutual respect with co-workers, and other staff; Ability to work cooperatively with other team members to maintain smooth workflow; Ability to work independently with average amount of supervision; Ability to recognize out of control situations, and notify proper personnel to remedy situation; Ability to follow through on work assignments; Willingness and ability to work changing hours if necessary; Basic knowledge of proper sterile technique; Basic knowledge of tissue culture; Knowledge of basic chemistry and biology; Knowledge of quality control and instrument usage; Ability to maintain water bath temperatures and water levels; Ability to keep accurate and organized records; Ability to perform lab calculations; Ability to perform laboratory tasks in timely manner in a high workload environment; Skill in performing work in an accurate and thorough manner with close attention to details in all areas; Ability to oversee the work of others and provide guidance and instruction as needed; Ability to work with potentially biohazardous material (human blood and serum); Ability to work with radioactive isotypes; Ability to work with hazardous chemicals.
Preferred: Knowledge of data analysis software, e.g. Excel, PRISM; Experience working with large sets of data; Experience working with patient biopsy samples; Experience with animal and IRB protocols.
