JOB DESCRIPTION

The Tactical Networks Group specializes in advanced network and communications systems development, with a focus on mobile and airborne networks of the future. Tactical wireless networks differ from commercial wireless networks in the lack of infrastructure to support stable connectivity. The varied and stressing operational environment, as well as aircraft speeds and maneuverability, and platform integration provide additional challenges to communication and network systems. The Tactical Networks Group uses a combination of technical analysis, modeling, simulation, emulation, prototype development, and flight tests to develop new communication systems and evaluate and predict their performance.

The Summer Research Program Intern will design, implement, and test emulation capabilities used to model and analyze communications networks with a cluster of computing servers. Possible topics for study may include:

* Conduct research and development in the areas of communications networks with emphasis on physical and MAC layer algorithms and protocols.

* Characterize performance and fidelity limitations of current physical- and link-layer wireless network emulation techniques, and discover methods to push these limitations.

* Collect detailed operating data from physical- and link-layer wireless network emulation models, under high-throughput and low-latency scenarios.

* Other topics based on mutual interest

As a member of our research team, the intern will have the opportunity to be engaged in the analysis of some of the most challenging problems in Computer Communications, collaborate with Laboratory scientists and engineers, observe and apply system engineering methodologies and solutions to complex communications systems.

Requirements:

* Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science with completed coursework in data structures and computer architectures; coursework in computer networks is a plus

* Experience with Python/Java/C/C++ programming; experience with MATLAB is a plus

* Additional strengths: familiarity with virtual machines (VMWare), network monitoring and analysis tools (Wireshark), Linux operating system; Experience with optimization techniques, queueing analysis, and analytical performance modeling.
