Dental Assistant Jobs & Employment Information

While the state essentially regulates the scope of dental assistant jobs, the core objective of these professionals is to help the dentist do their job well. Most dental assistant job openings lay down responsibilities such as scheduling appointments; manage walk-in patients, and guiding patients to the examination room. In addition to this, dental assistants will also be expected to sterilize dental tools, pass on tools to the dentist during procedures, maintain patient records and pursue billing and insurance matters.

One can find dental assistant jobs at independent or group practices, specialty health care centers, public health institutions and hospital and dental schools.

Before you apply for dental assistant jobs, some states may expect you to earn a certificate from an accredited training school. Other states permit assistants to work without any special qualifications and expect you to acquire on-the-job training.

As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental assistant jobs are expected to grow by 31% between 2010 and 2020 because of the progress in dental technology that allows baby boomers to retain their teeth for longer.

The median salary in the year 2011 for dental assistants was $34,140.
