WNY area. Asplundh. Groundperson - Entry Level Position.
NATURE OF DUTIES - Listed below is a general description of the work to be performed by an entry level worker or Ground Person. Employees will be trained in the safe and correct manner to perform these duties and will be under the direct supervision of a more experienced employee. Individuals may advance to higher level positions when training certification is successfully completed.
Cuts, drags, and carries brush and wood to truck for disposal, using and maintaining various size/weight chainsaws and power tools; gathers and feeds brush into trailer-mounted wood chipper. Loads and unloads trucks by hand; carries and lays out materials, tools, and equipment at the work site; furnishes these items to climbers manually or mechanically using lines, blocks, or winches; makes a variety of knots in the lines and hitches to raise and lower the items up and down the trees; gives and relays hand signals to direct traffic. Follows hand, voice, or other signals, or views the work directly in positioning the truck at the work site and in operating associated equipment. Services the truck and equipment; keeps the truck, trailer, and associated equipment in neat, orderly fashion; remains alert for the possibility of the need for repairs to the truck, truck equipment and tools; reports necessary repairs to the Foreperson. Operates Company owned and operated vehicles from time to time as may be required; uses normal driving care to safeguard other employees and the public; ensures that personal actions do not endanger others, particularly when controlling the movements of overhead hazards; uses care when others are standing or working nearby. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervision. These duties are performed year-round in all types of weather and in urban, suburban, cross-country sites, including mountainous and swampy terrain. Generally, work is performed on week days, but under "storm emergency" conditions or when otherwise necessary, work may be required on weekends and/or at night and at sites in other states. Overtime paid as applicable.
REQUIREMENTS: Must have a current motor vehicle operator's license; must be capable of operating large motorized vehicles such as those in line clearance operations. To operate these vehicles, must be qualified to drive Company owned and operated vehicles as defined by the Company's approved Driver and Education Program. Successful completion of pre-employment drug test. Must affiliate with local union. May be requested to obtain CDL. must be able to work fulltime schedule. Must be capable of understanding and following instructions from coworkers and supervisors.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Stands, walks, bends, stoops, lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, and uses hand lines; drives and operates a winch or winches, a boom by movement of levers and pedals while turning and twisting head and body; climbs on the vehicle or trailer; sorts, counts, lifts, moves, and passes out material and supplies for stock keeping; use small, common hand tools while servicing the truck, etc.
Lifting: 1 to 50 pounds. Picks up pieces of wood from ground and places in chipper. Pieces are cut to weight and size you want. If top heavy, it can be cut on ground to smaller size. Largest saw weighs 17 pounds.
