JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the planning, direction and developing of the drug discovery research strategy for the Chemical Biology core scientific area. This includes building this new scientific discipline into a world class organization and fully integrating this process into the overall drug development strategy of Discovery research. The Chemical Biology discipline seeks the use of small molecules with known or unknown target specificities to study dynamic biological processes at the gene, cellular, and organismal levels. The development of a successful strategy in this area and its full integration into Discovery Reseach should greatly enhance the ability to deliver 15 novel compounds.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide vision and strategy for the creation of a new core scientific area in Discovery Research. Demonstrate the effectiveness of Chemical Biology as a critical tool in the drug discovery process. Create seamless partnerships with the Therapeutic area heads and the heads of other core science areas to contribute measurably to the Discovery development metric.

Lead scientists to the highest level of scientific excellence and productivity in the creation of this new discipline and to the ongoing contributions in the Discovery processes of development and commercialization of new drug candidates.

Manage, support and evaluate external strategic alliance partners. Seek world-class partnerships to ensure maximum efficiencies and leading edge scientific capabilities

Prioritize, allocate and focus resources to provide the most rapid and effective identification and development of drug candidates

Identify and implement new technologies to expedite the drug discovery process

Create and sustain a company culture with the highest ethical and scientific standards and teamwork to achieve Discovery objectives.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

PhD with a minimum of 15 years postdoctoral experience in Pharmaceuticals or academic research environment. Seven to Eight of those years in management of large groups (20 plus employees).

Training in a world class academic or industrial laboratory

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated experience in the successful integration of core technology into the drug development process in a commercial pharmaceutical enterprise. Extensive basic research background in genetics and cell signaling is required.
These experiences must be accompanied with a superior record of publication in respected journals. An extensive understanding of the drug discovery and development process as well as considerable experience in directing and managing the research activities of drug discovery teams and large scientific groups is required. A proactive management style characterized by effective leadership, commitment, enthusiasm, communication and teamwork is necessary. In addition, the incumbent must be able to collaborate successfully with both internal and external colleagues to achieve company objectives.
