Assistant Professor, Choreography
Dance
Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts
Eugene Lang College the New School for Liberal Arts solicits application for a tenure-track assistant professor of choreography, in The Arts department's dance program, beginning in academic year 2010-2011. We are interested in candidates who are established choreographers with an interest in both theory and practice. We are seeking a movement-based artist who is experimental in his or her approach to content, form, and creative process, and whose work encourages critical thinking. Promising candidates will be committed artists as well as educators, with a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinarity. Possible areas of exploration include (but are not limited to) new media, intercultural performance, Non-Western and/or diasporic traditions, dance and activism, and somatic practices. The ideal candidate will contribute to multiple aspects of the curriculum, including courses in composition, repertory, and seminars open to students across the arts.
The dance program, a concentration within the Bachelor of Arts program in The Arts, combines rigorous practical training with interdisciplinary liberal arts courses, preparing students for careers in the dance and arts fields, from professional dancers to arts administration to graduate study. All the programs in The Arts marry theory and practice sometimes even within individual courses. The dance program attracts committed dancers who want a more fully rounded education and grounding in the liberal arts than is provided by conservatories. While the position is primarily dedicated to supporting the undergraduate program, opportunities for graduate teaching may develop as the program expands.
Requirements:
MFA in appropriate field
A strong record of scholarly research and significant college teaching experience
Substantial experience in the dance profession.
Undergraduate teaching experience preferred
PhD or other advanced degree in relevant program is desirable but not required
Review of applications will begin December 1, 2009 and the position will remain open until filled.
Application is online at http://careers.newschool.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=52011
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter describing experience and qualifications, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and practice relevant to this position, and a list of references. Applicants of interest may be contacted and asked to submit a DVD of their work at a later time.
