Applications are invited for the position of Senior Research Associate (SRA) in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at The University of Chicago. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a computational code for simulation of methane hydrates in a sediment column of the continental margin. The simulations will span the million-year time scale of the accumulation of kilometers of sediment column from initial rifting. The candidate will also be responsible for the application of field data to the model to constrain critical processes such as bubble migration and methanogenesis rates. The SRA will work closely with faculty directors to lead collaborations within the University of Chicago and between other institutions. S/he will contribute to research on a grant from the Department of Energy. One primary responsibility of the SRA will be to assimilate field data from deep sea drilling and the petroleum industry to construct detailed scenarios against which to compare the model results. The SRA will be responsible for initiating new scientific projects, such as the use of the model to evaluate deep sea sedimentary CO2 sequestration schemes in various settings, and to assist with applications for further funding, which would enable extension of the position beyond an initial time scope of two years. The candidate must have a Ph.D. and at least five years of research experience in Computational Geophysical Sciences. A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications, a statement describing past and current research accomplishments, and a list of at least three references must be uploaded to be considered as an applicant. To ensure full consideration, all application materials (including reference letters) must be received by December 31, 2009. Screening will continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates must apply through the University's acfademic Jobs website, academiccareers.uchicago.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=50697
