OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
As a member of the Chemical Biology Program, working in a research group focused on regulation of transcription using small molecules, performs biochemical studies involving direct interactions between small molecules and chromatin modifying enzymes such as histone deacetylases. Activities will include biochemical purification and characterization of individual chromatin modifying enzymes or relevant complexes. Other activities may include identification and characterization of novel substrates for selected chromatin modifying enzymes. Responsible for the delivery of high quality data that will drive the development of chemical probes in close collaboration with the chemistry project leads at the Broad Institute. Works collaboratively to guide projects through assay development and execution, data analysis, review and publication.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
- Responsible for the design, implementation, and validation of biochemical experiments. This will be done in close collaboration with project team members working on biochemical assay development and structural biology. - Generates and develops concepts independently; contributes or leads in major intellectual development activities. Provides innovative problem solving approaches to enhance project or group objectives. - Makes substantial contributions to determining feasibility of research goals and objectives. Understands and contributes to broad strategic objectives. Participates in grant writing and communication of results though scientific conferences and publications. - Works with HTS, automation, Chemical Biology informatics and Chemistry staff at all levels to develop, implement and monitor all processes. - Works with informatics group to define requirements for capture of biochemical protocols and analysis of data in ELN environment. - Other related tasks as necessitated by the position.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
- May supervise scientists, post-docs, students or technicians, provide major input to staffing of project teams, and or mentor / train staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in biochemistry or related field with 3 years experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or enzymology. Requires solid experience in the development and utilization of biochemical techniques such as protein purification, protein characterization techniques, and enzyme assay development. Experience with chromatin modifying enzymes, mass spectrometric analysis of proteins or structural biology is a plus. All successful candidates must have a can do attitude, good problem solving skills, communication skills, and organizational skills.
- 3 years experience in biochemistry with knowledge of purification strategies and enzymology. - Basic knowledge of computer applications required and experience with ELN a plus. - Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with internal and external investigators in a fast paced environment required. - Excellent organization and time management skills required. - Must be able to use sound judgment to handle a variety of tasks and to shift priorities simultaneously, as well as to effectively solve problems.
