Company: Erie County Medical Center Facility: Erie County Home at Alden Department: SNF - Unit S - ECH The work involves performing routine and semi-skilled tasks in the overall care of the physically ill, physically handicapped and mentally disoriented patients and residents at the Erie County Home. The incumbent receives direct supervision from a professional or para-professional nursing or medical employee of the Home. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Performs or assists patients in performing personal hygiene tasks such as tub and bed baths, washing, shaving, cleaning teeth, etc.; Assists patients in and out of bed and makes beds in accordance with prescribed directions; Delivers food and nourishment and assists in feeding patients; Passes and empties bed pans and urinals; Collects urine, fecal and sputum specimens; Assists in treatment of mentally disoriented patients by various repetitive means such as reminding them of their names, day of the week, where they are, the time of day, etc.; Assists in rehabilitation services to individuals or groups of patients by performing routine instructions in self-care to the blind and to others requiring specialized services in such areas as occupational and physical therapy; Wheels patients to and from clinics; Carries messages for nurses and doctors within the institution; Answers patients calls for assistance, stores and delivers clothing, cares for flowers, prepares ice packs, etc.; Cleans bedside stands and may clean bathrooms, utility rooms and does the general cleaning incidental to bedside care of patients; Prepares deceased persons and transports body to morgue; Sorts, counts and bags soiled linen, takes to laundry, picks up clean linen and stores it in the ward; Assists nurse in taking pulse, respiration, temperature, recording weights and giving treatments; Observes patients and reports apparent changes in condition or complaints to appropriate supervisor; Performs duties as ward clerk. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the techniques involved in feeding, bathing and caring for the ill or infirm; working knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques used in avoiding infection and contamination of equipment and supplies; ability to assist in rehabilitation programs for physically handicapped and mentally disoriented patients; working knowledge of first aid; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to assist in creating a cheerful and optimistic attitude in patients and residents; ability to get along well with others; willingness to perform unpleasant tasks; dependability; patience; understanding; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Completion of a minimum 100-hour training course as approved by the New York State Department of Health. NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements Full Time - FT Night Shift
