Description: JOB PURPOSE: Provides nutrition care of inpatients and out patients through the use of assessment and implementation of nutrition care, or physician’s orders. Instructs individuals and/or groups on normal and/or therapeutic nutrition. Provides resources for nutrition information. Implements procedures that support or attain departmental goals and objectives. RESPONSIBILITIES: (include, not limited to) Nutritional Care: Using established screening criteria, conducts a preliminary nutritional assessment for new patient admission in order to identify patients who need a nutritional care plan or a nutritional assessment. Provides a doctor’s orders, or referral from another health care provider. Completes a nutritional status assessment on patients found to be a nutritional risk and documents findings in the medical record. Monitors patients found to be a nutritional risk, making recommendations for change in diet order, need for food supplementation, need for altering foods offered, or aggressive external nutrition. Documents patients care activities in the medical record. Staff Nutrition Education: Provides and participates in nutrition related education programs for hospital staff at least one time per year. Serves as a nutrition resource person to the hospital and community through monthly work assignments and departmental programs. Provides annual nutrition lecture for Nursing Staff. Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor’s degree with a major in food nutrition: Currently registered or eligible for registration with the American Dietetic Association. Command of the English language sufficient to avoid safety risk. Licensed by the State of Massachusetts Experience: One year successful experience as clinical dietitian preferred. Must be thoroughly knowledgeable in all aspects of normal and therapeutic nutrition and its applications. Must possess emotional resources to maintain good working interpersonal relationships and be able to relate to acutely ill patients. Technical Skills: Demonstrates excellent communications and problem-resolution skills. Clear written and verbal communication skills required. Strong organizational skills and confidentiality are required. Ability to read, write and understand English so that dietary consults can be written and understood by medical staff. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status. Interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs. Provide care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Ability to use calculator and computer as required. Assist Manager of Food Service in developing menus that meet the nutritional needs of the population.
