You Don't Like Your Job - Now What!

The unemployment rate is high. You dread going into work. What to do? A large percentage of employees in the workforce say they do not like their job. But with a tight job market, many are staying in situations that are less than ideal to their needs. You can always look for a new job, or you can make the best of your current situation in the interim. Our experts outline some approaches to take to maintain a positive attitude - and hopefully change your job perception.

As with every big decision, one of the best ways to approach it is by writing a pros can cons list. First outline all the reasons behind your dissatisfaction at work. Do you have a long commute? Do you find your job unfulfilling? After you're done, determine if any items on your list can be improved. For instance, if you have a commute that is draining your energy, could you telecommute one day a week to reduce this stress? If you are feeling unmotivated at work, could this be an opportunity to ask for new responsibilities, or change departments. Speaking up in a proactive, positive way can help shift negativity into something more productive.

Now focus on the positive. What do you like about your job? What areas are the most fulfilling and are there opportunities to focus on these more. This may also be a good time to write down a long term career plan. Again, the goal is to shift your focus away from a job you don't like towards positive actions. Are there any continuing education courses you can pursue? Take advantage of any your company offers, or pursue your own courses or programs.

Being proactive by trying to change your current situation may propel you to a better work-life - and also a new job.

Take baby steps. If you see that there is no immediate way out of your current position, consider pursuing part-time work or a passion. This could be anything from a weekend retail job to freelance work like photography or writing. While this may sound like more responsibilities, this can actually open up a new career path.

Recognize that you do have options. If you are convinced that your current job is not for you, begin an aggressive job search plan. Experts recommend that you do not quit during this time as it is always easier to get a job when you have one. Update your resume. Update your online profiles. Lastly, change your words. When you stop using words like 'hate' you start changing your mindset. Do not engage in discussions at work that will only fuel the fire.
