JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Innovation Office at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) is seeking a translational champion someone to help accelerate getting exciting discoveries to patients. This Director of the Accelerator will report to the SVP, Chief Innovation Officer, and serve as a key member of the Belfer Office for Dana-Farber Innovations (BODFI / Innovation Office) supporting DFCI s Pipeline Accelerator. The Chief Innovation Officer has recently reorganized the Innovation Office with the vision of creating a relationship-focused and creative partnering team. The goal of this newly designed team is to make DFCI research, technology, and clinical tools increasingly more accessible outside of Dana-Farber through swift and effective development and commercialization to improve the lives of patients.
Dana-Farber leadership and the Innovation Office are expanding existing accelerator programming and funding sources to proactively engage our faculty as well as strategically manage, de-risk, and promote DFCI s translational research portfolio. We are looking for someone who is highly creative, energetic, scientifically adept and entrepreneurial and will bring a sense of urgency to this role. We truly believe that we can accelerate the time it takes for breakthrough science to get to patients and with the right approach to translational research and accelerator funding, we can have an even bigger impact.
* Support Pre-Proposal and Full Proposal Development for the Pipeline Accelerator:
* Engage with DFCI researchers in the basic science departments to identify potential applicants for Pipeline Accelerator funding.
* Work with DFCI researchers to develop R&D plans that will advance early-stage research and potential technologies to the next value inflection point.
* Identify and recommend enhancements to projects prior to submission of pre-proposals and final proposals.
* Work with investigators to specify proposed deliverables and milestones.
* Support ongoing research at Dana-Farber:
* Facilitate communication between and among DFCI researchers, project groups, programs/departments, core facilities, and the Innovation business development (BD) & licensing teams, as appropriate.
* Work with faculty directors to embed Pipeline Accelerator programming as a strategic effort at DFCI.
* Assist Pipeline Accelerator awardees in project management, including monitoring timelines, deliverables, milestones, and budgets. Facilitate sharing opportunities with the Pipeline Accelerator Internal Scientific Review Committee (ISRC) and Business Development Council (BDC).
* Coordinate development of agreements with contract research organizations, technical consultants, and other service providers as appropriate.
* Manage multiple projects and be involved in due diligence and project planning for future projects.
* Oversee the development of resources that may be shared by Pipeline Accelerator awardees, including:
* Shared communication website(s) and newsletter(s), grant management software, and other tools and technologies.
* Work directly with licensing, BD, and finance/administration colleagues in the Innovation Office.
* Act as liaison with other translational and therapeutics development efforts ongoing in the Boston life science ecosystem.
* Work directly with colleagues and the other Accelerator programs across HMS related hospitals to support development of Pipeline projects for future funding opportunities from other translational funding programs.
* Manage Pipeline Accelerator Fund Award Process
* Work with the CSO, CRO and Innovation Office representatives to draft request for proposals (RFP) for review by the ISRC; manage RFP distribution process.
* Coordinate activities of the ISRC and BDC, including setting up review meetings
* Ensure there are confidential disclosure agreements for external members of the BDC or other external Accelerator advisors and ensure that they are returned prior to distribution of proposals.
* Assist in regular communications with key stakeholders, including administration, faculty, relevant committees, Innovation Office Business Development & Licensing teams, and external audiences as appropriate.
* Arrange access to funds to awardees.
* Monitor income and expenses of Pipeline Accelerator resources. Ensure adherence to any fund restrictions.
* Support Pipeline Accelerator Reviewers:
* Recommend potential BDC and ISRC members.
Advise ISRC and BDC on research potential from technology development
* PhD highly preferred. Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in positions involving alliance management, business development, foundation and/or grant project management, scientific/technical evaluation, in an industrial and/or academic setting. Biopharma or investor industry experience required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Strong Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
* Postdoctoral research experience and industrial experience strongly preferred
* Awareness of the types and culture of research in an academic setting strongly preferred
* The successful candidate must have: Exceptional interpersonal skills for building relationships with scientists and other stakeholders with diverse profiles at multiple organizational levels
* Sound technical and scientific aptitude and proven ability to gain a sophisticated understanding of a range of scientific disciplines and areas of technology
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Strong competencies in planning, project management, and organization with the ability to coordinate multiple activities and resources, while maintaining a focus on quality
* Strong appreciation for the value system of academic institutions and faculty
* Solid analytical and strategic capabilities
* Ability to produce and present clear, concise, and professionally written communications and presentations
* Willingness and ability to handle confidential matters with utmost discretion
