SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:
The U of A Off-Campus Student Success is looking for the best peer mentors on campus. As one of our team, you will empower freshman commuters brand new freshmen who live at home with a parent or family member rather than in University housing to succeed academically, socially, and personally through relationship building, establishing connections with campus resources and supporting them as they transition to life in college.
As a peer mentor, you will attend the online Fall 2020 freshman Off-Campus Student Success University Perspectives (OC 360) classes and act as in-person resources during virtual class and as needed outside of class for virtual one-on-one meetings.
In order to be eligible to work as a mentor in Fall 2020, weekly attendance of at least one, but preferably two, of the three OC 360 courses is required. Qualified candidates who can attend all three classes will be given special consideration.
The schedule for these Fall 2020 classes is as follows:
Tu 9:30-10:20 am
Tu 12:30-1:20 pm
W 3:05-3:55 pm
Before submitting your application, please determine whether you will be able to consistently and without fail attend at least 1-2 of these classes. Inability to attend will preclude employment.
You will also be required to meet with staff for one hour per week to prepare for the classes, and one hour per week to meet with your own mentor, Wade Carter (OCSS graduate assistant) or Francesca D Agrosa (OCSS assistant director.) Your own success and use of support and resources are vital to the success of the mentoring program.
The set number of weekly work hours will equal 3 hours if you attend 1 class, 4 hours if you attend 2 classes, and 5 hours if you attend all three classes.
With documented proof, compensation will be offered for mentors who communicate with and/or meet with mentees outside of class. Documented proof can include an agreement signed by mentor and mentee, a series of emails or text messages, or other tangible evidence.
In order to ensure programmatic success, mentors will be expected to participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities throughout the year. The first training will take place online between August 10 and 23, 2020, and may span several days. This training is mandatory. Inability to attend full training will preclude employment.
Employees of Off-Campus Student Success are expected to work in a highly collaborative environment alongside other students, graduate assistants, and professional staff in order to serve our diverse student population.
* Must be enrolled full or part-time University of Arkansas degree-seeking undergraduate rising sophomore, junior, or senior
* 3.0 cumulative GPA or above
* Experience in an office setting and basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
* Previous experience as an off-campus student
* Familiarity with University of Arkansas resources and campus departments
FALL 2020 CLASS SCHEDULE:
Tuesday 9:30 a.m. - 10:20 a.m.
Tuesday 12:30 p.m. - 1:20 p.m.
Wednesday 3:05 p.m. - 3:55 p.m.
+1 hour for weekly training and preparation
+1 hour for weekly meeting with staff member
Must be able to consistently and without fail attend at least 1-2 of these classes. Inability to attend will preclude employment.
SALARY: $10.25/ hour, (non-work study and work study eligible)
