UC Irvine Office of Information Technology is a leader in delivering innovative solutions for UC Irvine and the broader University of California system via Software as a Service delivery and other models. You ll be working with an Agile team to build, run, and support UC s academic personnel recruitment system. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Executive Application Support, the Cloud DevOps Engineer manages system infrastructure for a major SaaS-based Ruby on Rails application providing service to 11 UC locations. Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced systems infrastructure professional with a full understanding of Amazon Web Services and containerization best practices. Resolves a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope. Designs and implements configuration management solutions that reduce long-term maintenance, improve reproducibility of deployed systems, and increase the visibility of system configuration. Selects methods and techniques in consultation with OIT Enterprise Unix Systems to obtain solutions. Adheres to campus policies and procedures. Evaluates cost/benefit of new technologies and alignment with OIT standards.

3+ years of relevant experience.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Understanding of AWS services, including but not limited to EC2, RDS, Lambda, ElastiCache, ALB, S3, Route 53, and SES. Required Understanding of container technology such as Docker and ability to design and implement container solutions within an AWS environment. Understanding of configuration management technologies such as Docker, TerraForm/CloudFormation, and Ansible. Able to apply knowledge in automating system provisioning and maintenance. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs. Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner. Ability to train application developers in basic maintenance of infrastructure code, AWS services, systems, and integrations. Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Advanced knowledge of AWS, Linux, and network security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.
Occasionally scheduled and unscheduled system maintenance will occur before 8am or after 5pm. This position will be on-call to respond to system outages or serious incidents.
Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions. Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Experience designing, deploying, and maintaining container orchestration solutions. Experience writing high level code such as Python or Ruby.
