Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 250 regular faculty members, 1,600 graduate students and 2,700 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole exceed $190.5 million annually.

EECS is one of the largest departments on the UC Berkeley campus consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, over 3,100 undergraduates between the College of Engineering and Letters and Science majors, 650 graduate students, and 65 staff members. The EECS mission is to provide high-quality instruction at all levels, prepare undergraduate and graduate students for leadership in the profession, perform high-impact research, and serve the campus, the State and the nation.

The EECS department now serves more than 25,000 enrollments each year and hosts more than 3,100 majors across its L&S Computer Science and EECS programs. Many individual course offerings enroll 400 or more students, with the largest enrolling over 1,700 in a semester. Teaching and course quality ratings have increased in these large courses despite the rapid growth in enrollments over the last decade. The department continues to be committed to offering world-class learning experiences to its many students.

Reporting to the Director of Undergraduate Student Instruction, the Academic Specialist or Course Manager, has responsibilities that include providing a wide range of process improvement and course management duties for the EECS department. This position utilizes specialized skills in teaching & learning, complex coordination, management, and supporting instructors and student course staff. Activities will include advising faculty on staff selection, coordinating exam administration, responding to student requests regarding course policy and processes, and acting as a liaison for sensitive issues. Through these endeavors, the position s mission is to enhance students academic success and ensure EECS courses run efficiently. Additionally, this position may execute logistical processes within and/or across courses; for instance, coordinating crucial administrative processes that may affect perception of course quality.

The incumbent provides assistance to the Dean/Chair, faculty, and course staff in course and curriculum logistics, mechanics, administrative and academic processes, and iterative improvement in a variety of areas relevant to a student s experience in one or a sequence of our courses. When necessary, this will involve collecting pertinent data by surveying students, making data requests to the relevant departmental or course staff member, or independently searching by accessing various systems available on campus.


50% Assists instructors and student instructors with course-related logistics and administration such as exam administration and processing, coordinating course staff activities, scheduling, and coordinator training and review sessions.

With input from instructors, recruits, selects, orients, evaluates and supervises qualified student instructors. Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for the training of student course staff members and developing programs and processes to support recruitment, appointment, and preparation, and retention.

20% Utilizing specialized expertise in teaching & learning, engages EECS course oversight responsibilities, and executes aspects of course planning and implementation. May include developing and implementing new curricular and administrative processes that enhance student learning outcomes as well as the course staff experience.

15% Liaises student cases where accommodations are necessary due to special circumstances. This includes DSP accommodations, potential make-up exam arrangements when warranted and student athlete engagement. May undertake other miscellaneous exceptions involving project submission or other deliverables.

Takes a lead role with student conduct cases. This may involve detection of misconduct or overseeing conduct investigation processes in concert with course instructors and GSIs.

15% Responds to student requests regarding course policies, structure, and logistics. When students identify and communicate challenges, incumbent will devise strategies and solutions to resolve issues when possible.

* Advanced knowledge in theoretical concepts of adult learning. Knowledge on methodologies to enhance student success.

* Advanced knowledge of a broad academic discipline or learning needs of a broad student category.

* Advanced knowledge of specific learning styles, linguistic issues.

* Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution.

* Knowledge of academic curricula.

* Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.

* Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.

* May require knowledge of NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.

* Interpersonal skills.

* Skills in judgment and decision-making.

* Advanced knowledge on research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific).

* Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.

* Supervisory skills to hire, train, and provide coaching and guidance to student workers and student interns.

* Bachelor s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

*The salary range designated for this position: $67,500 - $98,900; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
