Responsibilities

70% - Administrative Duties

Writing
- Prepare grant proposals, manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and book chapters
- Conduct literature reviews as required to support written documents
- Attend meetings relevant to overall job responsibilities
- Ensure proper format is used for grant proposals including incorporation of new and changing requirements
- Provide appropriate responses to manuscript and grant reviews
- Assist in writing letters for personnel issues

30% - Editing

- Edit and revise drafts of research documents, including grants and manuscripts
- Correct formatting, spelling, grammar and terminology errors
- Organize text for style, form and content
- Proofread galleys for page proofsQualifications

1. Graduation from college with major work in English, journalism, or an allied field, in a subject matter area related to the editorial specialty. PREFERRED

2. Demonstrated academic and scientific writing and editing skills

3. At least 5 years of professional editorial experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

4. The ability to use online library databases

5. The ability to concisely summarize published articles to capture the intent, methods, results, and conclusions

6. Ongoing ability to maintain current knowledge in the field

7. The ability to work independently or in collaboration with other writers, editors, and/or scientific investigators

8. The ability to follow directions provided for manuscript preparation, grant proposals, oral/poster presentations, and for other scientific dissemination activities

9. Knowledge of academic English, including grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax

10. Knowledge of medical, scientific, psychological and psychiatric terminology

11. Knowledge of standard proofreaders marks and terminology

12. Ability to coordinate with multiple collaborators on writing projects

13. Ability to use a computer keyboard with speed and accuracy

14. Knowledge of computer software to include Microsoft Word, HTML, and other software as applicable

15. Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and diplomatically with faculty, publishers and colleagues

16. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently

17. Ability to prioritize work submitted for editorial review

18. Working knowledge of UCLA Biomedical Library

19. Ability to be discrete in handling sensitive materials

20. Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with all departments and outside agencies involved in production development

21. Knowledge of internet search procedures and web site identification

22. Ability to synthesize materials obtained from multiple sources and produce a cohesive product
