The transportation sector is on the verge of dramatic change. Rapid technology development and evolving consumer preferences are enabling market penetration of autonomous, connected, electric, and shared (ACES) mobility. Proliferation of these technologies has the potential to significantly alter how people travel, how goods are shipped, and how the transportation sector consumes energy.
Idaho National Laboratorys Advanced Vehicles Group is researching future charging infrastructure needs of ACES mobility and the integration of that infrastructure with the electric grid. Building on a decade of research on light-duty electric vehicles and their demand for charging, the group has expanded its scope to study how the electrification and automation of a wide array of vehicle types will affect charging infrastructure and impact the grid. Future electric vehicles, from aerial drones and automated package delivery vehicles to automated electric passenger cars, buses and long-haul trucks, will have distinct operating profiles that, in many cases, will demand extremely high-power charging. Charging these vehicles will present unique and significant challenges to energy infrastructure.
Additionally, ACES mobility introduces new cybersecurity risks to vehicles and connected infrastructure. The Advanced Vehicles Group and its partners assess cybersecurity vulnerabilities and subsequent risks introduced by connected vehicles and charging infrastructure. They are also researching added challenges introduced by vehicle automation that risk safe vehicle operation and charging.
To address new challenges brought on by ACES mobility, the Advanced Vehicles Group and its partners perform targeted experimentation and field evaluation, data analytics, model creation and validation, and simulation to predict the driving and charging needs of the future transportation ecosystem. They use these processes and tools to develop strategies to integrate electric vehicles with the grid, co-optimize charging and vehicle operation to maximize battery life, and mitigate cybersecurity risk.
In order to rapidly accelerate this important research, INLs Advanced Vehicles Group is seeking a senior researcher who can lead a team of talented, versatile scientists and engineers in the evolving field of electric vehicle/grid integration. As a principal investigator, you will lead the team to build on existing capabilities to develop new methods for modeling charging demand across a wide range of use cases and future mobility scenarios. You will also work with the team to characterize performance of emerging high-power conductive and wireless power transfer technologies and develop models for incorporation into system-level simulations. Finally, you will lead development of new methods for designing, locating, and managing charging infrastructure to meet consumer demand for charging while minimizing impact to the electric grids distribution network.
You will be expected to openly and collaboratively conduct work, including jointly publishing results and developing proposals, with other INL scientists who are renowned experts in vehicle charging system characterization, grid dynamics and control, energy storage, renewable generation resources, and cybersecurity. You will bring expertise in electric vehicle and charging equipment operation, communication, and control to the cross-functional team. Further, the researcher will also regularly collaborate with scientists at other national laboratories through joint vehicle/grid integration projects. You will regularly interact with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) program managers and other customers to propose new work, negotiate contracts, communicate results, and respond to customer requests for information. Finally, you will strengthen the groups network of industry and academic partners and advisers.
As a senior principal investigator, you will be required to do the following:
Lead cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, defensible results that meet customer needs for timing, budget, and scope
Publish articles in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and present papers at national and international conferences and events
Uphold INLs safety-focused culture, demonstrating commitment to safe behavior and continuous improvement of safe research practices
Continuously engage in dialogue with colleagues within and outside the group to openly share ideas and seek diverse opinions
Expect colleagues to challenge assumptions and be willing to dispassionately defend and improve scientific reasoning
Lead peer reviews of others work and participate in peer reviews of his or her own work
Mentor junior research staff
Provide thought leadership in meetings with INL colleagues, DOE, other national labs, other external stakeholders, and in public forums
Propose and lead research projects in new areas that align with department, directorate, and laboratory goals
Develop relationships with new federal agencies and other customers and capture new funding
Help establish INLs future transportation research strategy and advise DOE on national research priorities
Hold a Ph.D. in an engineering or scientific field, with at least 7 years of experience in a relevant field
Have demonstrated success leading cross-functional research teams and developing new research program(s)
Have experience designing, developing, and/or conducting experiments with high-voltage electrical equipment
Special Requirements and/or Training:
The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:
Proficiency programming in LabView and Matlab, C#, Python, or other equivalent software environments
Development or diagnostic experience with controller area networks
Experience with consumer demand and/or electric grid load forecasting
Experience working at or with electric utilities on projects focused on integrating electric vehicles and/or distributed energy resources with the grid
