Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking experienced risk and reliability engineers to lead and conduct research related to large risk projects for complex technologies. The primary industry and technologies in which the research is applied, includes a major focus towards those of commercial nuclear power and some emphasis on aerospace. As a researcher in this capacity, individuals are responsible for reporting project tasks (planning, budgeting, scheduling, tracking and execution) to the department manager.

Individuals are often called upon to provide technical consulting to senior management, lending a risk perspective to the decision-making process. Active participation in national and international professional activities such as leadership positions in technical societies, sitting on standards committees, and publishing in industry journals is an expectation in this position.
You must attain recognition as an expert in risk and reliability to fulfill service as a peer reviewer within the department and for primary customers. You must also demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge and skills to serve as a mentor to junior engineers and interns.


BS degree in a scientific or engineering field plus 2 years of relevant experience, or MS degree in a scientific or engineering field plus 1 year of relevant experience, or a PhD in a scientific or engineering field.

Special Requirements and/or Training:
Experience in the following areas of research and applications are desired:
- Basic understanding of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA)
- Graphical fault trees and fault tree analysis
- Reliability, availability, maintainability, analysis (RAM)
- System safety analysis
- Nuclear plant operations analysis and technical assistance
- Statistical analysis
- Operational event database development, analysis and maintenance
