Work Location: Idaho Falls, ID
***This is a multi-level posting***
Leading Nuclear Energy and Research Technology
MISSION: Discover, demonstrate and secure innovative nuclear energy solutions, other clean energy options and critical infrastructure.
VISION: INL will change the world's energy future and secure our critical infrastructure.
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a Wireless Communications FPGA R&D Engineer. The INL Wireless R&D group is in the process of developing a custom proprietary wireless communication system based on a novel spread spectrum technique. Initial concept has been completed with standard COTS (Commercial off the Shelf) hardware and software.
INL now wishes to move the communication system onto hardware and software that is closer to actual deployment. This system incorporates multiple communications waveforms to implement a spectrally-agile MANET network. The FPGA developer/engineer will write and install the VHDL code implementing the waveform on developmental radio platforms. The waveforms include 1) a lower-rate filter-bank multi-carrier-spread spectrum (FBMCSS) waveform that operates under the RF noise-floor, 2) a higher-rate WOLA OFDM waveform for the transport of IP traffic and 3) a spectrum sensing and analysis waveform.
The employee will collaborate with the development team to refine, and finalize the system requirements. These requirements will be based on the current platform capabilities as well as anticipated future system capabilities.
MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with minimum 3 yrs experience or BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with minimum 5 yrs experience with developing physical layer VHDL code.
Must be a US Citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.
Demonstrated Ability to lead small software development teams
Experience with software estimating and methods to track team progress
Minimum 3 yrs experience with software/firmware design, development, testing
Minimum 3 yrs experience with hardware design, assembly, testing, debugging
The FPGA developer would be involved with one or more of the following:
- Implement physical layer FPGA code in VHDL for various waveforms on the Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale platform
- Integrate the various waveforms into a common FPGA load
- Conduct testing of the integrated waveforms
- Assist with performance and field testing of the system.
The FPGA engineer/developer should have working knowledge of wireless technologies including:
MANET MAC/PHY systems and waveforms. Commercial and/or defense related with an emphasis on custom development (vs developing to a published standard)
JTAG, Oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Logic Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzers
VHDL experience is essential
SELECTIVE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for employment at INL males between ages 18 and 25 must register (or must have registered) with the Selective Service System (SSS). This includes U.S. born and naturalized citizens, parolees, undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, refugees, and all males with visas of any kind which expired more than 30 days ago. The few individuals who are exempt from this requirement are those on current non-immigrant visas. For more information see www.sss.gov.
