The Senior Laboratory Technician is responsible for assisting the Histotechnologists, Pathologists, Customer Service and provide daily support to the Histology Laboratory operations.

The Senior Laboratory Technician has demonstrated the skills and competency to work in a high throughput production environment and has the ability to work on manual and automated processing steps and other support functions. S(he) has a detailed understanding of laboratory workflow processes to address needs and issues and to participate and lead laboratory projects under supervision of project lead or supervisor.
The Senior Laboratory Technician may serve as a lead to the laboratory technician to coordinate tasks and divide workload as assigned and may schedule meetings and provide f/b and duties to management. S(h)e may review and organize documents, and participates in studies and is engaged in process and quality improvement activities as assigned.
The nature of the work requires excellent attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Maintain stringent standards for quality, identifying any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety, and immediately communicating these to management as necessary to ensure prompt resolution
* Pro-actively prepares the laboratory for audits and inspections
* Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment in the laboratory
* Manage and organize inventory of slides, tubes, and blocks
* Assist Histotechnologists in batching samples, label printing, and verification of specimen labeling
* Assist Histotechnologists and Pathologists in research, development and validation studies as needed
* Use Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to track requisition and specimen status and ensure prompt turnaround time of specimens
* May set up lab equipment or performs equipment maintenance as assigned and assist in troubleshooting equipment issues as assigned.
* Accurately documents and maintains all records for equipment and instruments.
* Support the training of Laboratory Assistants and Laboratory Technicians on current and new procedures as assigned
* Assist with organizing and maintaining personnel and training documents as assigned
* May interact with the Customer Service team by phone, fax or e-mail to obtain required information and documentation as assigned
* May support Histotechnologists in monitoring the Histology queue for various tasks that need to be performed and performs these tasks with little supervision
* May review/ revise SOPs under guidance of supervisor
* May participate in projects under the supervision of a Histotechnologist/ Supervisor along with maintaining quality and efficient work flow of daily duties
* Participate in Quality Assurance activities such as internal audits and inspection preparation
* May assist with automated procedures according to the laboratory's standard operating procedures
* May lead the Laboratory Technician team to coordinate tasks and divide workload as assigned
* Manage daily the case distribution board and support training efforts

* Minimum of a High school diploma, Associate degree preferred
* At least three years of related experiences in a high throughput production environment, or Laboratory Technician experience at GHI, demonstrating a high level of competency in assisting specimen processing steps and all other supporting functions
* Ability to maintain inventory/ resources in an organized manner, experience preferred
* Ability to review and revise written procedures, experience preferred
* Ability to use a computer and learn to use new tracking programs
* Ability to analyze issues and trouble shoot or escalate for assistance
* Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
* Ability to anticipate and adapt to changes in workflow and schedule
* Ability to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner
* Ability to provide constructive advice to contributors and department management
* Ability to prioritize and drive to results with a high emphasis on quality
* Ability to work as part of a team or independently under minimal supervision
* Ability to provide pro-active and regular communication of issues, risks and problems
* Ability to maintain open communication with internal employees, managers and customers as needed
* Ability to act as role model to team members by providing guidance and constructive f/b
* Ability to maintain stringent standards for quality by adhering to SOPs
* Ability to be highly detailed and quality oriented when handling patient specimens or other tasks
* Ability to multi-task and be flexible with tasks and schedules

* BS or BA degree in Life Sciences or a related field or equivalent
* Experience with high volume laboratory operations
* Experience with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
* Experience in managing projects under minimal supervision and complete assignments as expected
* Experience in training Lab Techs/Lab Assistants on current or new duties
