WestEd's Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) program is committed to increasing knowledge in science, technology, engineering, & mathematics among our nation's youth. The program offers services, materials, and strategies that support teachers' professional growth in content knowledge, effective teaching practices, appropriate assessment, and evaluation. International studies show that U.S. students rank below many other countries in science and mathematics performance. The STEM program seeks to reverse this trend by helping prepare teachers to meet the learning needs of all students, ensuring our nation s future in science and mathematics education, as well as technology.

WestEd is seeking to hire child assessors to work in Martinez, Pittsburg, and Dublin (East Bay), CA administering a brief number assessment to pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade children.

These child assessments are part of a large federally-funded project to develop and validate an early number sense screener to be used in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade classrooms. The developed screener will be used to identify children with mathematical difficulties in the early years of school, thus allowing for targeted intervention before difficulties become persistent and deep. This position offers a great opportunity to gain valuable assessment experience working with young children. Assessments will be conducted in Fall 2018. Training and certification on the assessment instruments will be provided in August. Successful applicants will be paid for all training and certification, as well as for time conducting assessments and associated research activities. This is a temporary position, but other research opportunities are possible.

This is a part-time position. Successful applicants can expect to work, on average, between 15-25 hours per week during the time period that assessments are being conducted. Applicants must be available to work at least 3 days per week during school hours. We anticipate trainings and certifications to occur in August. Assessments are expected to begin in early September and to conclude by the end of November.

QUALIFICATIONS

B.A. or higher in Psychology, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or closely related field.
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
The ability to learn quickly, with close attention to detail.
Must be able to work at least 4 consecutive hours, at least 3 days per week during the assessment period.
Valid driver's license, insurance, and access to a personal vehicle for transportation to the school sites.
Proof of negative TB test required, and proof of additional up to date vaccination(s) may be required for Pre-K assessments.
Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Fluency in English required; intermediate bilingual (Spanish-English) proficiency preferred, but not required.
Prior experience working with preschool or elementary school children preferred.
