The Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies (TDPS) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Reading and Composition (R&C) R1A or R1B or Performance Studies classes. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 40% to 80% time.
The R1A course offers students frequent practice in a variety of forms of discourse leading toward exposition and argumentation in common standard English. The course develops students' fluency with sentence, paragraph, and thesis-development skills, with increasingly complex applications. The second course, R1B, aims at developing students' fluency in writing longer and more complex papers, with specific attention to the development of their research skills and their ability to incorporate source material effectively. Because learning to write cannot be done outside of a context of reading, frequent practice in both writing and reading is a focus of both R1A and R1B.
The Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies is part of the Division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Letters and Science. Its programs integrate undergraduate and graduate instruction with student participation in theater, dance, and performance studies. There are approximately 100 majors in addition to 25 students pursuing a Ph.D. in the Graduate Group in Performance Studies. Approximately 400 students are enrolled per semester in courses that engage in participation in productions as actors, dancers, builders, stage crew, stage managers, directors, choreographers, or designers. The department has an active performance season and offers upper division courses in theatrical design and technical theater.
Basic Qualifications: must have a PhD (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program at time of application.
Additional Qualifications: a PhD (or equivalent international degree) is required by the start date.
* Demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English.
* Familiarity with UC Berkeley Reading & Composition course requirements.
* Knowledge of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies.
Salary Range: The minimum starting salary is $56,381, based on a two semester, 100% time appointment. Salary is commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties may include holding regular office hours, calculating grades, advising students, preparing course materials, managing GSIs, and attending appropriate meetings/orientations, etc.
UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

Reading and Composition Courses:

Performance Theory: An examination of a theoretical topic or perspective on performance, with specific attention to the interface between theoretical endeavor and dramatic, nondramatic, and nontheatrical modes of performance; may involve visiting artists. Topics vary from semester to semester.
Performance and Culture: An examination of performance as an aspect of cultural production, ranging from everyday-life enactment to more formal or aesthetic activities associated with "artistic" production; may involve visiting artists. Specific attention to the methods of ethnography, cultural studies, and intercultural performance analysis. Topics vary from semester to semester.
Performance and History: An examination of the historical conditions of performance, either given in a historical period or comparatively, with specific attention to the relationship between methods of historical studies and performance; may involve visiting artists. Topics vary from semester to semester.
Performance and Literatures: An examination of the formal, ideological, and cultural dynamics of drama, with specific attention to the relationship between methods of literary studies and performance; may involve visiting artists. Topics vary from semester to semester.
Performance Research Workshop: Advanced performance workshop with research including performance-based methodology, theory, and analytical research skills in developing written and performance works. Topics include cross-disciplinary arts, dramaturgy, and collaborative practice.
