JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY GENERAL SUMMARY STATEMENT
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST I performs a variety of routine and complex procedures. Duties include the handling and processing of patient specimens and the cultivation, isolation and identification of bacteria and other microorganisms from a variety of sites. May also perform various tests in molecular microbiology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology or virology.
edical Technologist I is normally trained to perform various functions and tasks in routine bacteriology, specimen receiving area and one or two other subspecialties. Medical Technologist will perform those duties and responsibilities, as outlined below, in lab areas where they have been trained and are technically proficient. Relevant activities described below may include, but are not limited to those duties and responsibilities.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Gains experience and develops working knowledge by performing routine and complex procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and manual methods
* Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of results
* Performs and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance and quality control
* Refers problems and unusual results to appropriate personnel
* Performs clerical and support services as needed. Responds to customer needs and requests
* Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and internal and external continuing education
* Participates in continuing education programs related to laboratories
LAB AREA SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Enters patient data and test requests from laboratory requisitions into Laboratory Information System (LIS) following prescribed coding procedures. Resolves any patient identification problems with appropriate patient care area. Reports specimen problems (i.e., wrong type specimen container, leaking specimen containers, hemolyzed specimens, etc.) to appropriate patient care area. Assists with requisition review to verify completeness and accuracy of test orders.
Prepares blood, urine, stool and other specimens for analysis by labeling requisition forms and specimen containers with appropriate patient data using labels generated by LIS.
Process specimens for analysis by culture, direct microscopic examination, serological tests or other test methodologies. Cultures specimens on prescribed media such as agar plates and broth tubes. Incubates the media in environments that are appropriate both to type of specimen and to the organisms routinely sought in those specimens. Process blood specimens for serological tests or other non-culture test methods. Performs rapid POCT-type testing.
RAPID TESTING AT SPECIMEN RECEIVING
Performs rapid POCT-type ICT testing (Influenza A & B, RSV, Malaria, Shiga Toxin, Clostridium difficile toxin) and rapid molecular testing on automated Cepheid GeneXpert Infinity 48-16 instrument (Influenza A & B, MRSA, SA, Clostridium difficile toxin).
Examines new and ongoing cultures for the growth of microorganisms. Identifies organisms by their colony and gram stain morphology, culture requirements and biochemical reactions from a variety of available methodologies. Sets up susceptibility testing when appropriate and by appropriate methodology.
Examines and reports results for routine gram stains from a variety of body sites under supervisory review. Examines and reports stat gram stains within TAT guidelines established by Critical Callback Policy.
Works up new positive blood cultures, notifies clinician and/or care unit with results within TAT guidelines established by Critical Callback Policy, enters results in LIS and sets up appropriate media and preliminary identification and susceptibility tests. Removes negative blood cultures and performs daily maintenance on the BACTEC blood culture instruments.
Performs set up for Vitek automated ID and susceptibility card. Sets up appropriate dilutions for manual disc diffusion testing. Correctly streaks plates and dispenses discs for disc diffusion testing. Performs ancillary susceptibility tests such as microdilution tests (MicroScan and Sensititre) and E-tests under supervision. Verifies VITEK results. Sets up weekly QC testing in Susceptibility area.
Performs routine molecular microbiology bench work using manual, semi-automated and automated nucleic acid amplification & detection methodologies. Assists with requisition and worksheet review to verify accuracy and completeness of results. Troubleshoots equipment problems, performs monthly maintenance, and QC. Assists maintaining inventory of instrument consumables and preparation of reagents Assists with telephone inquiries and provides results to clinical healthcare providers.
Performs digestion and concentration of contaminated specimens for mycobacterial culture. Plants all specimens for mycobacterial culture and, prepares and examines smears for the detection of acid fast bacilli. Operates, maintains and records data from the Bactec MGIT instrument. May also examine new and ongoing cultures for the growth of mycobacteria. May identify mycobacteria by their colony and AFB stain morphology, culture requirements and DNA probe methodology. Assists with telephone inquiries and provides results to clinical healthcare providers.
Performs fungal wet preps and plants specimens for fungal culture. Assists in media preparation. Examines CHROM agar plates from upper respiratory, vaginal, stool and urine cultures for growth. Performs yeast identifications. Assists in some aspects of QC in Mycology lab. Assists in fungal identification and Nocardia identification with close technical supervision by senior technologist. Performs nucleic acid probe test for histoplasma and blastomyces. Sets up, reads and records QC. Assists with telephone inquiries and provides results to clinical healthcare providers.
Performs specimen processing for parasitology specimens. Sets up and reads IF tests for Giardia and PCP with supervision. Performs Clostridium difficile assay. Assists in clerical and QC activities in parasitology. Assists with telephone inquiries and provides results to clinical healthcare providers.
Separates serum in serology and performs infectious disease serology testing using manual agglutination methods, automated DSX EIA instrumentation and Gen-Probe Tigris instrumentation. Assists with all clerical and QC activities. Maintains and troubleshoots instrumentation. Answers telephone inquiries and provide results to clinical healthcare providers.
Prepares, reads and results specimens for CMV shell vial assay. Performs EIA membrane tests for rotavirus. Process respiratory specimens for viral culture and DFA testing. Performs direct specimen DFA for Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, HSV and VZV. Reads HSV cultures. Inoculates specimens into tissue culture media. Answers telephone inquiries and provide results to clinical healthcare providers.
