The UC Davis Department of Radiology is actively recruiting a full-time Academic physician specializing in Nuclear Medicine. Appointment can be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank in the Series of Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) or Clinical Research (Clin X) series depending on experience and qualifications. This individual will participate in our research, teaching and clinical program in PET, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology.
The selected candidate will have the intent and potential to develop an independent research career and will play a pivotal role in the development of the Nuclear Medicine research program at UC Davis. This includes clinical trials, the use of advanced reconstruction and kinetic modeling techniques, novel radiotracers (see http://sutcliffe.bme.ucdavis.edu) and the revolutionary two-meter long Total Body PET scanner (http://explorer.ucdavis.edu). Junior appointees committed to research will be encouraged to apply for NIH career awards.
Qualified candidates must possess an M.D. or D.O degree. Candidates must be board certified or board-eligible in Nuclear Medicine (ABNM) or Nuclear Radiology (ABR) and must have or be eligible for licensure in the State of California. Ability and experience in teaching medical students, residents and fellows is essential. Experience in clinical and translational research is also required, as is expertise in all aspects of Nuclear Medicine including therapy, single photon imaging, PET/CT and multi-modality imaging. Experience in caring for Nuclear Medicine patients is required. The candidate must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.
Preferred qualifications include: board-certification (or board-eligible) in Diagnostic Radiology (DR) is preferred but not required; a Ph.D. degree; experience in collaborative and multi-disciplinary research; experience in clinical trials; experience with INDs and novel radiopharmaceuticals; experience in IT/Informatics and diverse computer systems; willingness to work and experience in other non-nuclear radiology services as well as Nuclear Medicine; track-record of building multi-disciplinary collaborations; track-record of research productivity; and track-record of gaining extramural research funding.

The UC Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) is located in new facilities on a 140-acre Medical Campus in Sacramento. The Radiology department performs 400,000 exams/year and has 40 faculty. About 3500 Nuclear Medicine studies and a similar number of PET-CT exams were performed last year. Nuclear Medicine equipment includes three PET/CT s including the EXPLORER Total-Body scanner, three SPECT-CT s, a dual head SPECT, and a single head SPECT camera. Adjacent to one of the PET/CT scanners there is a Rubidium Chloride generator that supports a busy cardiac PET service. There are two DEXA machines, a thyroid probe and an intra-operative probe for positron emitters available. There are two medical cyclotrons and a state-of-the-art GMP-grade radiochemistry facility on site.
Equipment is excellent throughout the Department. We currently have a Canon Aquilion ultra-high resolution CT (the first such to provide clinical service in the US), three Siemens CT Scanners (a Definition dual-source dual-energy, a Definition AS+128-slice, and a Somatom 64-slice), two General Electric VCT 64 slice CT Scanners, and a GE Lightspeed 16 slice CT scanner dedicated for interventional procedures. MRI equipment consists of four clinical GE 1.5T scanners, one clinical 3T magnet, and a 1.5T musculoskeletal extremity scanner. There are additional 1.5 and 3T systems supporting research in the adjacent Imaging Research Center.
The Department of Radiology provides full diagnostic, Doppler, interventional, and RF ablation guidance ultrasound services. Equipment includes state-of-the-art General Electric LOGIQ E9 and E10 ultrasound systems for head/body and high risk fetal ultrasound procedures, as well as multimodality US / CT fusion capabilities for virtual navigation. The mammography clinic and associated vascular lab have advanced Philips ultrasound equipment for procedural tasks. UCDMC provides a fully integrated electronic medical records system and a fully digital Radiology Department.
The Department and the Medical System have a strong commitment to academic and clinical career development. Successful candidates will be supported by research mentors with strong track records in nurturing independent investigators (including such luminaries as Dr. Simon Cherry, Dr. Terry Jones and Dr. John Boone). The Department of Radiology has very close collaborative ties with the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Areas of excellence in medical research include (but are not limited to) cellular therapeutics, neuroscience, musculoskeletal diseases and cancer. Clinical research is facilitated by the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. Other resources include the Center for Molecular and Genomic Imaging (a state-of-the-art small animal imaging facility with its own cyclotron and radiochemistry program http://cmgi.ucdavis.edu) and the California National Primate Research Center. The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine is actively engaged in nuclear imaging research and participates in translational projects. Both the Primate Center and the School of Veterinary Medicine are equipped with high-performance mini-EXPLORER long-axial-field-of-view PET scanners.
