We are seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nursing Practice Specialist to join our team on the Phillips House 22. This is a nineteen-bed unit of single-occupancy rooms designed to promote healing and family-centered care. The unit is dedicated to the care of men and women from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds with complex needs and problems. The specialty populations cared for on the unit include benign and malignant gynecology, general surgery, and post-partum. Patients admitted to this unit require complex oncology care which may include chemotherapy regimens, chemotherapy desensitization, biotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, proton therapy and palliative care. The scope of care includes acute medical and surgical diagnoses as well as chronic illnesses associated with acute episodes. Care is given over the illness continuum from diagnosis to control, remission or advanced disease.The Clinical Nurse Specialist/ Nursing Practice Specialist is a master's prepared nurse with an area of specialization within nursing who promotes competent, compassionate and professional nursing care for patients/families across the continuum. The role includes patient care, teaching, consultation and research. The CNS/NPS demonstrates excellence in professional nursing practice. The CNS/NPS develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs based upon assessed learning needs of patients, families, and staff; provides expert consultation to patients, families, nurses, and other health care providers to promote positive patient care outcomes; participates in research activities that will positively affect patient care and patient care outcomes; demonstrates accountability for ongoing personal/professional development. On this unit, expertise in managing complex surgical wounds is required.Job Description1. Clinical Practice - Provides expert-level consultation and advises clinical staff on the formulation of diagnoses and treatment plans for patients and families. Demonstrates excellence in providing direct and indirect nursing care to patients and their families.1.1 Expert-level consultationi. Supports independent nursing practice of professional nurses through collaborative, consultative, and role modeling activities.ii. Analyzes clinical and non-clinical variables to influence, supervise, manage or oversee patient care needs and predict and manage responses.iii. Provides expert consultation within their specialty area at the unit, program, service, administrative, and community level(s).iv. Professional Development - Demonstrates accountability for ongoing personal/professional development.4.1 Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing and health care practices.4.2 Identifies own learning needs and goals, and designs a plan to meet them.4.3 Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees and task forces of the Department of Nursing, MGH at large, and across Partners.4.4 Participates in activities that foster peer support and networking.4.5 Fulfills professional role through involvement in professional organization activities, presentations, and publications.Primary responsibilities of the CNS include:Supporting independent nursing practice through collaborative, consultative and role modeling activities* Applying new technology, nursing theories, research findings and experiential knowledge to improve nursing practice* Responding to changes in clinical practice by planning, designing, implementing or evaluating guidelines, protocols and standards in collaboration with the nursing director, nursing staff and others.* Implementing and evaluating educational programs and practice changes based upon assessed learning needs of patients, families, and staff.* Education and training of nursing staff to earn Chemotherapy Administration certification by a nationally recognized certifying body.*QualificationsCurrent Massachusetts RN License required.* Master's degree in Nursing required.* Knowledge of Oncology Nursing including Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification* Knowledge of surgical nursing and CNS/NPS experience preferred.* Wound Certification is a plus.* Dedication to both bedside teaching and formal hospital education programs.* Ability to multi-task and to support staff nurses, who range from new graduates to those with 30 years of experience.* Ability to develop and support unit-based quality improvement/research projects.a. Graduation from a graduate degree program with a clinical practicum designed to prepare the graduate for practice as a CNS that is approved by a national accrediting organization for academic programs acceptable to the Board; andb. Successful completion of, at minimum, core content at the graduate level in advanced assessment, advanced pathophysiology and advanced pharmacotherapeutics.c. Current CNS certification granted by a Board recognized certifying organization* OR-Nursing Practice Specialist Requirementsa. Master's degree in Nursing.b.
