ABOUT THE UNIT
This position will support the following two programs. The University of Chicago serves as the national program office for both programs. Their offices are based in the Biological Sciences Division, Department of Medicine, Section of General Internal Medicine. 1) Bridging the Gap: Reducing Disparities in Diabetes Care (Bridging the Gap) Bridging the Gap is a 5-year initiative that aims to improve access to high-quality care and reduce disparities for vulnerable and underserved populations with type 2 diabetes in the United States. The initiative promotes inter-sectoral collaborations that bring together stakeholders from inside and outside the health care system to address disparities in health outcomes. The Bridging the Gap program office works in collaboration with its funder, the Merck Foundation. It will collaborate with the Foundation, 8 grantees and a network of strategic partners to promote innovative strategies to improve diabetes care among vulnerable populations, disseminate the work and findings of Bridging the Gap, and provide leadership and vision that meaningfully contributes to the national discourse on health equity. More information about Bridging the Gap can be found at BridgingTheGapDiabetes.org 2) Advancing Health Equity: Leading Care, Payment, and Systems Transformation (Advancing Health Equity) Advancing Health Equity is a national program that includes a learning collaborative and technical assistance activities for seven teams comprised of state Medicaid agencies, Medicaid health plans, and health care provider organizations and systems in the states of Delaware, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington. The program convened the seven teams to design integrated payment and health care delivery reforms to reduce health and healthcare disparities. The teams also address social determinants of health as part of their efforts and generate best practice and policy recommendations for national dissemination. The Advancing Health Equity program office works in collaboration with its funder, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and two partner organizations - the Institute for Medicaid Innovation and the Center for Health Care Strategies. Responsible for all aspects of research projects and research facilities. Plans and conducts clinical and non-clinical research; facilitates and monitors daily activities of clinical trials or research projects. Directs engineering and technical support activities to develop and maintain tools and computational methods needed to gather and analyze data.

Oversees all aspects of management, scientific technological development, and operations for major research projects or research facilities. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Presents research findings at meetings and/or conferences.
P2: Requires knowledge and experience in own discipline; still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills. Builds knowledge of the organization, processes and customers. Solves a range of straightforward problems. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction.
The job participates in scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.
1) Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan., 2) Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates., 3) Takes responsibility for the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Acquires higher-level skills and knowledge in the process., 4) Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject., 5) Performs other related work as needed.
1) Work closely with members of both teams and external partners to describe and analyze key details of complex healthcare payment, delivery reform, and social determinants of health interventions, synthesize data, and identify key lessons and recommendations.
2) Create materials that will be used by organizations and individuals seeking to translate and implement lessons for their own settings. Example translation and dissemination materials include training curricula, guides for the creation of cross-sector health-equity intervention work plans, healthcare delivery reform strategy overviews, policy briefs, academic manuscripts, conference presentations, and posters.
3) Coordinate the design and delivery of technical assistance to program grantees and learning collaborative participants. Examples of delivery modes for technical assistance and dissemination include virtual training (e.g., webinars) for specific stakeholder groups (e.g., health plans), in-person (e.g., site visits, conferences) and phone-based technical assistance and direction to state Medicaid agencies, health plans, and healthcare provider organization team members, social media (e.g., Twitter and blogs), web-based curricula, program web sites, academic journals, and conference presentations.
4) Refine and revise broad research questions into manageable research hypotheses and aims.
5) Conduct reviews of the published and unpublished literature.
6) Synthesize complex findings from the programs, including literature reviews, into clear and simple solutions for technical assistance and health and healthcare policy recommendations.
7) Responsible for creating and implementing qualitative data collection protocols, including creating interview guides, recruiting and tracking participants, conducting interviews or focus groups, and managing/coding/analyzing data utilizing qualitative data software platforms.
8) Assist with conducting cross-site evaluation of program implementation and results.
9) Assist as co-author on scientific journal articles, including the development and maintenance of literature databases and utilizing Endnote software.
10) Actively participates in team meetings.
11) Work independently and within teams on both ongoing and nonrecurring projects, ensuring that the project progresses according to specified goals and time parameters.
