JOB DESCRIPTIONA Research Technician (RT) works independently under the guidance of the laboratory director, clinical laboratory staff, and research laboratory manager and oversees lab studies. The RT performs a variety of microbiological methods, both manual and instrumented. RT will help evaluate study data and will compile and maintain research data, regulatory binders, lab notebooks, and study databases. The RT may also perform data analysis and QA/QC data checks. The RT is directly supervised by the Microbiology Assistant Laboratory Director and the Research Laboratory Manager.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Research Technician will be working under the guidance of the LaRocque lab in the MGH Infectious Diseases Unit, primarily focusing on a project evaluating COVID-19 transmission in high-risk contacts of individuals with COVID_19 infection. The RT will divide time between the LaRocque lab and the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at MGH performing laboratory screening for presence of the COVID-19 virus and/or COVID-19 antibodies. RT will assist in preparation and processing of study sample collection materials, make updates to the study database, and utilize various molecular methods to characterize upper respiratory, saliva and dried capillary blood spot samples. These methods will be performed in accordance with standards of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and will be overseen and coordinated by the Microbiology Assistant Laboratory Director. The position may also involve work on other projects that the LaRocque lab is focused on, in the areas of acquisition of antimicrobial resistance in international travelers, and immune responses to enteric pathogens.
RT duties will include:
Processing of upper respiratory and saliva specimens for molecular detection for COVID-19 per established protocols
Extraction of COVID-19 RNA from upper respiratory specimens and saliva
Preparing specimens for shipment to external laboratory for gene sequencing studies
Preparing/receiving shipments of sample collection kits to/from study participants
Evaluation of dried blood spot samples for immunological characterization of antibody responses to COVID-19
Interpretation and documentation of testing results including maintenance of laboratory notebooks
Compiling and summarizing data from testing using statistical and graphical methods
Preparing lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment
May perform independent literature searches
Assisting with organizing materials for publication or presentation, including basic statistical analysis
Maintaining and ordering supplies

Laboratory setting, may be exposed to infectious specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated in a clinical laboratory setting.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree required
Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training:
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE, CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE OR MICROBIOLOGY FOCUS PREFERRED
Preferred: 1 year of directly related experience is required, preferably experience in clinical microbiology lab
